Home Education as Personal Rebellion

by | Essays

I often say home education is my personal rebellion against the systems that oppressed individuals like my son for centuries.

Unschooling, in particular, is a resistance to all oppressive institutions, including those that oppress marginalized communities.

Through unschooling, everyone is valued for who they are—children and adults alike.

We squash hierarchies and foster interdependence. We overthrow discrimination and inequity. We build autonomy and agency.

And, we do all this through practices that nurture the whole human being.

I invite you to reflect on how you can pulverize oppressive mindsets right from where you are, and then go celebrate all the people who are doing just that.
