Representation and Inclusion in STEM Education

by | Essays

Inclusion is not solely a disability matter.

We cannot talk about representation while excluding other identities.⠀

Schools do this well when they boast STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programs for girls.

While this is progress, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community still experience inequity in STEM careers. My friend doesn’t see her Black daughters represented in technology spheres. And, I don’t see my disabled son represented in science fields.⠀

Who are we excluding when we only highlight one identity?⠀
